Understanding Our Grading System
At Kung Fu Schools Horsham, we’ve designed a grading system that builds confidence and ensures every student is fully prepared as they progress through their martial arts journey.
The Eight-Week Grading Cycle
Our grading process follows a structured eight-week cycle that gives students ample time to learn, practice, and master their skills:
Weeks 1–4: Getting to Grips on the New Syllabus
This is the start of the new syllabus, where all students begin to learn the basic moves within their group. These foundational weeks allow students to become familiar with new techniques and build their muscle memory.
Week 5: Tip Test (Training in Progress)
This is an in-class assessment where we observe our students and tick boxes on their grading form. We identify the areas they'll need to work on to easily pass their next grading. This gives both instructors and parents a clear picture of each student's progress.
Week 7: Pre-Grading
During this week, we go over all of the material that will be covered in the actual grading. We practice, refine, and prepare each student so they feel confident and ready for their grading.
Week 8: Grading Week
This is the actual grading, where all students demonstrate the material they learned throughout the cycle. The key difference here is that they perform more independently, without as much help from us, showing what they've truly mastered.
What Happens When They Pass?
When students pass their grading, they receive:
Their certificate of achievement
Their new sash
Black badges or red badges (for higher belts)
Our method has been tested
